Since formation in 1947 Stevenson & Cumming have participated in a wide range of Professional Instructions in addition to carrying out the normal range of Commercial and Residential Sales and Management. Valuations for various purposes including Mortgages & Probate. One of the earliest tasks was to negotiate compensation on behalf of The Great Northern Railway Company for the loss of turf stacks belonging to various owners which had been set alight by sparks from a steam powered railway engine.
In 1964 the entire frontage of West Street, Portadown and several streets of sub-standard housing were acquired by means of Compulsory Purchase Order leading to numerous compensation claims on behalf of clients where Magowan Buildings now stands. In 1966 large tracts of Agricultural Land were acquired compulsorily in connection with the proposed new city of Craigavon and some outstanding compensation claims remained unsettled for years.
Major property sales handled by the firm included the 190 acres Lyons Estate in Rostrevor, Co. Down, now Kilbroney Park. Sale of the Atkinson Estate to Portadown Borough Council now, Bachelors Walk Park and sale of 180 acre Hockley Lodge Estate between Portadown and Armagh, now a residential home.
The firm was also instructed in several interesting projects which did not proceed such as the Camlough Pumped Storage Scheme for generation of electricity and a proposed Cement Factory on a ridge of limestone near Dromore, Co. Down which was eventually located at Cookstown.
On behalf of the Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority, Stevenson & Cumming arranged the purchase by agreement with various owners the 100 acre site for Craigavon Area Hospital.
In a period when Residential Development in the vicinity of Portadown was severely restricted due to a freeze on planning matters Stevenson & Cumming initiated New Housing Development in Tandragee and Richhill on behalf of Liscon Developments Ltd and other builders.
